Lime and nutrients for Asparagus
Nutrient | Application Advice |
---|---|
Lime | Where necessary, apply lime to give an optimum pH of 6.5 – 6.8. |
N | Apply 70 – 140 kg/ha N as a base dressing when establishing asparagus. In the maintenance phase use up to 100 kg/ha N at the end of the cutting period. |
P and K | Apply P and K rates as in the tables below. |
FYM | Apply at planting, and repeat every third or fourth year but reduce the N, P and K application by 1.4 kg/ha, 1.2 kg/ha and 6 kg/ha respectively for each tonne/ha of well rotted and well stored FYM used (SI 31 of 2014). |

N | Apply 90-140 kg/ha N as a base dressing. |
P and K | Apply P and K rates as per the table below. |
B |
Beet is subject to a disorder known as ‘Canker’ caused by boron deficiency. Use a boronated compound fertiliser or apply 2.25 – 4.5 kg/ha of Boron, folliar or soil applied. |
FYM |
If livestock manure is available, annual applications are usually beneficial to both soil and crop but reduce the N, P and K application by 1.4 kg/ha, 1.2 kg/ha and 6 kg/ha respectively for each tonne/ha of well rotted and well stored FYM used (SI 31 of 2014). |

Lime and Nutrients for Carrots
Nutrient | Application Advice |
---|---|
Lime | Where necessary, apply lime to give an optimum pH of 6.5-6.8. |
N | Depending on soil fertility, apply a base dressing of 40-90 kg/ha
Top dressings are not usually required. |
P and K | Apply P and K rates as in the table below. Sulphate is the preferred form of K for carrots. |
B | The disorder known as “Five o’clock shadow is caused by a deficiency of boron, so the use of boronated compound is recommended. Alternatively, apply 2.25 – 4.5 kg/ha of boron, folliar or soil applied. |

Lime and Nutrients for Celery
Nutrient | Application Advice |
---|---|
Lime | Where necessary, apply lime to give an optimum pH of 6.5 – 6.8. |
N | Depending on soil fertility apply 50-100 kg/ha N as a base dressing.
Celery has a high nitrogen requirement and a top dressing of up to 180 kg/ha N is required depending on the nitrogen status of the soil. |
P and K | Apply P and K rates in the table below. Celery has a high demand for K so care should be taken to ensure adequate levels are applied to the crop. |
B | Celery is sensitive to B deficiency which causes the disorder known as “cat claw”. On new peat ground 4.9 kg/ha of boron should be applied. On other soils 2.25 kg/ha of boron should be sufficient. |
