Teagasc at Bloom

Horticulture, education, forestry, crops and countryside management are all featured on the Teagasc stand at Bloom. Teagasc have joined with Bord Bia and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine at Bloom in the Phoenix Park, to create an informative and educational feature in the food village at the event.

The theme of the exhibition is “Horticulture is Life”, highlighting the importance of the horticulture industry in Ireland and the role it plays in securing national food supply in a sustainable way into the future.

Among the visitors to the stand on Thursday were Ministers Charlie McConalogue, Pippa Hackett and Martin Heydon who viewed the forestry driving simulators, used in the delivery of the education programme, and the vertical growing towers, which are used in research to reduce food waste.

The theme of the exhibition is “Horticulture is Life”, highlighting the importance of the horticulture industry in Ireland and the role it plays in securing national food supply in a sustainable way into the future.

Daily demonstrations and talks on a range of topics including: exploring the splendour of the planted garden that surrounds the feature; bringing the beauty of Ireland’s blooms indoors with cut flower and foliage; the importance of biodiversity; getting to know different trees; and how to be successful with houseplants.

The new apprenticeships in horticulture, which are being delivered by the Teagasc College of Horticulture at the National Botanic Gardens and Kildalton College in Kilkenny were highlighted at the event, along with the full suite of education courses available in horticulture, forestry, and crops and animal production.

Teagasc Horticulture Development Department is looking at the future of food including snapshots of the research and advisory activities that support Irish growers. The science of crop and plant production is being brought to life by Horticulture research and advisory staff by demonstrating a high-tech vertical tower used to grow herbs in hydroponics, under LED lights.
