Future Weather Future Farming
Future Weather Future Farming

Weather has always been a factor in farming. Expert analysis of climate change outlines that we can expect increased variability, and more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. This requires that our farming systems are resilient to weather shocks. Weather is particularly important to tillage farmers, but this year, grassland farmers were severely impacted by poor weather in the summer /autumn of 2012 and the spring of 2013. This was a costly experience for farmers, particularly so on heavy soil farms which are especially vulnerable to wet weather. Teagasc has monitored the situation on the ground over the year, and data from the Teagasc National Farm Survey will show the impact on farm profitability.

Moorepark Milk Quality Conference 2013
Moorepark Milk Quality Conference 2013

A critical prerequisite for the manufacture of quality dairy products is to start with milk of the highest quality. Abolition of EU milk quotas in 2015 is projected to result in a 2.75 billion litre increase in Irish milk production by 2020. This increase has the potential to put ressure on the current quality standards, while the milk quality criteria requested by milk processors and by customers generally are becoming more strict and rigorous. It is important that requests to milk producers for improved quality milk is accompanied by the necessary information required to produce such improved quality milk.

Carbon-Neutrality as a horizon point for Irish Agriculture
Carbon-Neutrality as a horizon point for Irish Agriculture

This study was conducted in the context of the discussions on the development of a new national climate change policy and the publication of the Heads of a Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development Bill on 26 February 2013 by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Minister Phil Hogan, T.D. Specifically, it aims to address and provide a scientific framework for the formidable but constructive challenge posed to the agricultural industry in the final climate policy analysis report from the NESC Secretariat: "Ireland and the Climate Change Challenge - Connecting ‘How Much’ with ‘How To’". The latter report proposes to work towards carbon-neutral agriculture as a ‘horizon point’ for 2050, in which agricultural emissions are fully offset by carbon-sequestration.
