Silage testing – what the results mean

On this episode of the Teagasc OviCast podcast, Teagasc Sheep Specialist, Ciarán Lynch speaks to Dr Tim Keady about the importance of silage testing and what the results mean.

Tim emphasises the importance of getting a silage test conducted correctly and early, to know the feed value of your winter forage. He explains the variation in results seen nationally, what each of the measures mean and, most importantly, the implications for feeding.

The results of the silage analysis are also discussed in regard to how they can be used to highlight areas to focus on for next year’s silage harvest. And finally, Tim finishes by discussing the implications of feeding different feed value silage has on animal performance and the amount of supplementation required.
