ICON-MAP

ICON-MAP was a multidisciplinary DAFM project on controlling Johne’s disease in cattle, notable for its multi-actor co-design of on-farm disease control and prevention tools.

Sociological research on farmers’ practices and beliefs around disease control was fed into a transdisciplinary co-design process with farmers, vets, advisors, policymakers and others. Through a series of workshops, and integrating sociological results depicting farmers’ knowledges and experiences, the team co-created practical farm-level actions and interactive aids (recording templates, information briefs, illustrated storyboards) to help implement disease Critical Control Points (in a HACCP-based approach).

A cartoonist brought the tools to life, working with narratives from the co-design process. The resulting practitioner-friendly tools were designed with end-users to ensure greater uptake of biosecurity measures and packaged in a graphically designed pdf, and the graphic designer was also a part of the co-design workshops. The work was further extended in the aftermath to address biosecurity testing, working with farmers and Regional Veterinary Laboratories to develop approaches that would make testing easier at farm-level, transportation to the lab, and more informative results for farmers.
