- Event: Forest walk – Managing broadleaf woodlands under Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF)
- Date: Tuesday 23 April @ 7.00pm sharp
- Meeting point: The layby between Carnaross and Kells, Co Meath, Eircode A82 YW89
Teagasc, in association with the Northeast Forestry Group has organised a forest walk on Tuesday 23 April, in Ballynamona, Co Meath starting at 7.00pm sharp. This event will focus on the conversion of young Oak woodlands to CCF, the grants and incentives available and the importance of good access to the site. Topics covered on the evening will be very applicable for owners with other broadleaf species. Kevin O’Connell, forestry advisor with Teagasc, Liam Byrne, a representative from Pro Silva Ireland and broadleaf harvesting contractor Conor Murphy will be on hand to explain the processes involved.
Under the Woodland Improvement Scheme 2023-2027, Elements 1 – 5, financial support is available to assist with the costs of thinning both broadleaves and conifers to manage them under CCF. Also for the first time, there are payments available for ecosystem services.
This walk through a young, 20-year old Oak woodland that has been thinned twice will focus on different options available in the context of the new Forest Programme. It will be an ideal event for participants to plan for and envisage how their woodlands can develop and be managed. Discussions on the evening will include topics such as access, native woodlands, broadleaf and conifer forests, thinning and Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF).
