Teagasc Forest Research Day

The Teagasc Forestry Development Department is organising a Teagasc Forest Research Day on Wednesday 16 October 2019 at Teagasc, Oak Park, Carlow. The aim of this day is to showcase Forest Research within Teagasc.
Join us at this free outdoor event for an opportunity to see the role forest research has in addressing the challenges and opportunities across many aspects of forestry and forest management in
Ireland. Our research covers many aspects of the life cycle of a forest from seedling to sawdust.
The tree improvement programme focuses on breeding for resistance to ash dieback disease and the development of improved alder and birch for the afforestation programme.
To ensure correct species choice, research focuses on identifying the right tree for the right site using
various tools such as site classification, land use analysis, economic modelling and socioeconomic
research.
To assist in management, our research programme also focuses on the management of
broadleaves and conifers, and aims to assist in the development of best practice in farm forests and promotes the use of timely tending, thinning and crop management to maximise timber utilisation.
The following research topics will be highlighted:
- broadleaf tree improvement (birch/alder)
- broadleaf silviculture
- integrated pest management (IPM) of pine weevil
- ash dieback resistance
- conifer research projects
- continuous cover forestry (CCF)
