Celebrate the Power of Discovery with Teagasc Science Week 2025

Teagasc is delighted to announce an inspiring line-up of Science Week 2025 events, taking place from the 9th to the 15th of November, featuring a nationwide programme of activities designed to spark curiosity, ignite learning, and showcase the science shaping the future of food and farming in Ireland

Led by Eimear Ferguson, Teagasc Science Communication and Engagement Officer, this year’s programme brings science to life through hands-on experiences, creative workshops, school visits, farm tours, quizzes, exhibitions, and family-friendly events across the country.

From exploring the weather’s impact on agriculture to discovering how seaweed supports gut health, Teagasc’s Science Week 2025 activities offer something for everyone, whether you’re a student, parent, teacher, or lifelong learner.

Science Week Marina Market: Fun for all the family at Science at the Marina 2025

“Science Week is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to connect with the work our scientists do every day, from the farm to the lab, and see how Irish research is helping to shape a sustainable future,” said Eimear Ferguson. “Our events this year aim to inspire curiosity, encourage exploration, and show how science is at the heart of everything we do, from the food we eat to the environment we share.”

Family Events

Saturday, 8th November – Science-Themed Story Time (Mitchelstown Library, County Cork)
Celebrate Science Week with this fun, family-friendly session.  Hear science-inspired stories and learn about exciting Teagasc research with Eimear and Sarah, who’ll be on hand to answer curious questions.

Saturday, 15th November – Science at the Marina (Marina Market, Cork City)
One of Cork’s most popular Science Week events returns.  This free, all-ages celebration brings together scientists, artists, and curious minds for a vibrant day of discovery. Expect interactive experiments, competitions, workshops, and art.
A dedicated Quiet Hour (10:00–11:00) offers a low-sensory way to enjoy the fun.

Primary School Events

Wednesday, 12th November – Moorepark Farm Walk (Kilworth, County Cork)
Students will explore a working dairy farm, learning about milk, grass, and cows through interactive demonstrations,  from milking machines to how grass fuels healthy herds.

Thursday, 13th November – School Science Quiz (Moorepark, County Cork)
A fun quiz for 5th and 6th Class students featuring demonstrations and questions on food, farming, and the environment – with prizes to be won.

Friday, 14th November – School Science Quiz (Ashtown, Dublin)
The quiz excitement continues in Dublin with another chance for 5th Class students to showcase their science knowledge and curiosity.

In addition, Teagasc colleagues across the country will visit schools, in counties including Waterford, Wexford, Dublin, and Roscommon, to deliver engaging science talks and classroom demonstrations, bringing research to life in communities nationwide.

Tuesday, 11th November – “So Ewe Want to Know More About Sheep?” Farm Walk (Athenry, County Galway)
At Teagasc Mellows Campus, students will explore animal science, sheep breeding, grassland management, and sustainability, seeing real research in action.

Tuesday, 11th November – “Clouds, Crops and Climate” Webinar (Online)
In collaboration with Met Éireann, join scientists from both organisations for a live nationwide webinar exploring how weather and climate science supports agriculture. Includes an interactive Q&A.

Thursday, 13th November – “Beef Up Your Knowledge” Farm Walk (Grange, County Meath)
Learn about grassland management, genetics, animal health, and sustainability at Ireland’s leading cattle research centre, and meet postgraduate students conducting cutting-edge studies.

Evening Events

Wednesday, 12th November – Vision of Research Exhibition (Oak Park House, Carlow)
A stunning photography exhibition showcasing finalists from the Vision of Research and Innovation Image Competition. Each image tells a story of discovery and creativity in food and agricultural science.

Wednesday, 12th November – Udderly Delicious Workshop (Watergrasshill, County Cork)
A fun and flavourful evening await at O’Mahony’s Gastropub in Watergrasshill. Guided by the resident mixologist, John Coleman, guests will have the chance to shake, stir, and sample their own creations – each with a playful dairy science twist inspired by research from Teagasc and VistaMilk Research Ireland. Thursday, 13th November – GutED: Seaweed, Science & Health (BIA Innovator Campus, Athenry, County Galway)
Explore how seaweed is shaping the future of food and wellness.
