Presentations from the National Liquid Milk Event which took place on the 17 October in the Ferrycarrig Hotel and Johnstown Castle.

Location: Ferrycarrig Hotel, Wexford & Johnstown Castle field visit

Overview:

The 2012 Teagasc National Liquid Milk Conference took place on Wednesday 17th October in Wexford. This event will included a morning seminar in the Ferrycarrig Hotel Wexford, followed by a visit after lunch to the Johnstown Castle liquid milk research farm.

The theme of the morning agenda was ‘Meeting the management challenges of a split calving system’. Topics discussed were:
• Building an animal health plan for a liquid milk herd
• Managing replacement heifers to boost lifetime performance
• To keep or cull?- The economics of carryover cows

In a year of very difficult weather and price/cost conditions, the on-farm session focused on providing liquid milk producers with timely technical information:
• Feed cost and quality- options for winter 2012
• Review of Johnstown herd performance and feed budget plans
• Breeding decisions and correct cow type for liquid milk production
• Improving farm infrastructure for better use of forage
