Building farmer resilience

Building farmer resilience

Beef farming in Ireland brings a unique set of physical and emotional demands. Studies show that farmers face high rates of burnout, stress-related illness and mental health challenges.

As part of Men’s Health Week, taking place from 9-15 June, we recap on some strategies farmers can utilise to build resilience on their farms.

Through the platform provided at the Teagasc National Beef Conference last November, Health and Wellness Coach, Shane Pearson presented strategies to enable farmers to overcome the intense and often seasonal stressors that can take a toll on their mental and physical health.

Shane Pearson’s presentation to the National Beef Conference, available to view in the video below, delved into the many aspects of resilience, sharing a pathway to develop this vital skill to aid farmers in navigating the many challenges they experience on a day-to-day basis.

Based on research and real-world experience, Shane Pearson introduced farmers to the concept of the ‘5 Ps of Resilience’: Presence, Purpose, Power, People, and Preparation. These five pillars offer a clear, accessible guide to help farmers manage stress, maintain balance and improve overall wellbeing.
