Irish Soil Types and Maps

Ireland’s soils play a central role in supporting sustainable agriculture, water quality, biodiversity, climate action, and nutrient management. National soil survey research began in the 1960s to improve understanding of soil types, properties, and their distribution across the country through detailed mapping and field survey work. Combining historic county soil surveys with more recent national-scale research, the new interactive national soil map developed by the Irish Soil Information System  project provides an important resource for land management, environmental planning, and agricultural decision-making.
