Organic Hill Farming in Co. Kerry
Sarah and Aaron Turner are organic sheep and suckler farmers living in the stunning landscape of West Kerry. They are participants in the Growing Organics programme, and are passionate about sustainable agriculture.
Their farm is nestled within the Killarney National Park National Heritage Site, an area known for its natural beauty and ecological importance. The Turners have three young children, all keen to get involved in farm life. They are enthusiastic organic farmers believing that the ethos blends well with the unique landscape they are committed to maintaining.
The family keeps a flock of around 60 ewes, primarily of the hardy Blackface breed. Lambing begins in April, a choice to avoid the harsher weather of early spring.
In recent years, Sarah has introduced a suckler cattle enterprise, focusing on Dexter cattle, a rare breed known for their small stature, ease of handling, and suitability for hill farming. Calving typically starts in July.
The Turners are also proud participants in the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES), which promotes biodiversity and sustainable land management. They work hard to implement practices to enhance pasture health and contribute positively to the local ecosystem.
Hill Sheep and Suckling
Given certain limitations with hill ground management, the Turners’ are keen to avail of scheme participation in a way that will combine appropriate land management with improved financial returns. Their goal is to produce high quality organic sheep and cattle in a way that is both sustainable and rewarding and offers a lifestyle that is attractive for family and community life.
Their farm is also supported by participation in the BISS (Basic Income Support for Sustainability), ECO, and ANC (Areas of Natural Constraint) schemes.
In the video below, Sarah speaks with organic advisor Kevin Fitzgerald about why she chose Dexter cattle for their hill farm in Co. Kerry.
