Listen: Early February grazing tips from Grass10
The Teagasc Grass10 team has introduced a new, weekly Grass10 update via podcast format. For this week’s grazing management update, Joseph Dunphy discusses PastureBase data, dry matter percentages, predicted grass growth, and rainfall and soil temperatures.
The Grass10 advisor explains why planning for early grazing is necessary before the workload really gets into gear on dairy farms nationally, with farmers encouraged to complete an opening farm cover, a spring rotation planner and a grass budget.
“When you have your average farm cover, your rotation planner and your grass budget completed, identify the first number of paddocks that you want to graze during February and have your temporary reels and posts at the ready,” he said.
Joseph also provides an update from the Clonakilty Research Farm in Co. Cork, where grazing has started, as well as the dos and don’ts in relation to early spring slurry and nitrogen applications.
