Facilities and Work life balance on Steven Fitzgerald’s Farm

Facilities and Work life balance on Steven Fitzgerald's Farm

A Teagasc Tirlán Signpost Farm Walk, as part of Signpost Sustainability Week, took place on the farm of Steven Fitzgerald, in Co. Waterford on Thursday 20th October 2022.

This is a family farm where parents and his wife Catriona are involved.  Steven and his Dad work the farm primarily with a student in the Spring and some family labour also. Since quotas went Steven has gone from 70 to 170 cows. The 1st step was to put in a new cubicle shed.  He is just finishing the milking parlour, going from a 12 unit to a 24 unit parlour.  The main reason he has done this is to free up time for himself and his family. He will save himself 2 hrs a day on the milking process.  He has a good setup, minimising soiled water and getting cows to and from the sheds easily.  Basically a better quality of life with better work life balance.
