Biodiversity on Steven Fitzgerald’s Farm

A Teagasc Tirlán Signpost Farm Walk, as part of Signpost Sustainability Week, took place on the farm of Steven Fitzgerald, in Co. Waterford on Thursday 20th October 2022.

There is already very good biodiversity on Steven’s farm with 10% biodiversity on the farm, so he has retained what he had.  The next step for Steven was to enhance the features that he has on the farm.  To enhance hedges, it means allowing them to grow taller, up to 5 ft and to do this gradually over a few years and also to allow flowering whitethorn and blackthorn tree to grows in the hedge and that they flower and fruit during the year. 

One practice that all farmers could take on board: Retain flowering thorn trees in the hedges and encourage the height of your hedges.
