Job Summary

Background:

The ICT Department plays a pivotal role in supporting Teagasc to achieve its mission of providing leadership and support to Irish farmers and food companies in achieving a sustainable food system.  The department provides services to over 1,000 employees across 50 locations in addition to students and contractors throughout Ireland.  There are currently 22 staff members organised into five units – Applications, Technical Services, Service  Delivery, Research/Innovation and Security/Continuity.

We are now looking to expand our Technical Services Team with additional Infrastructure Analysts.  The Technical Services Team are responsible for the design, build, rollout, maintenance and support of all physical ICT infrastructure.  The appointee will play an active part in the team with the primary responsibility of managing, maintaining and developing the organisation’s ICT infrastructure in order to provide an efficient and reliable service to Teagasc staff, students and external clients.  The successful applicant will have strong technical and administrative ability, project leading abilities and excellent customer and vendor relationship management skills.

This position provides an exciting opportunity to join the ICT Department as Teagasc embarks on a new Digitalisation Transformation Strategy aimed at delivering transformative change in a number of areas across the organisation, and involving increasing use of cloud technologies.  Further information on can be found in the Teagasc Statement of Strategy 2021-2024.

Basic Function:

Responsibilities will include oversight of the support of Networks, Systems and Servers, including server and switch hardware, SAN storage, WAN/LAN and Wireless infrastructure, data centre racks and comms rooms in various locations around the country, OS and software associated with delivering these services to the organisation with a focus on improving overall robustness and functionality and achieving efficiencies in the delivery of ICT services.  The appointee will, in conjunction with the Managed Service partner, external business partners and other ICT staff, assist with the design and implementation of new network and server infrastructure and the support and back-up of existing systems and configurations.

The appointee will be required to attend data centre sites in Kildare Street and Backweston and other sites on both a scheduled and ad-hoc basis.  If the successful applicant is not primarily based in Ashtown there will be an expectation of regular and frequent visits to the Ashtown Campus to liaise in person with counterparts in the Managed Service.

Job Objectives

  • Actively contribute as a member of the Technical Services Team to the delivery of infrastructure services and support within Teagasc and as a member of the ICT Department to the overall delivery of the Department’s goals.
  • Manage the network or/and systems administration of our estate of wired and Aruba wireless networks, Dell, Cisco, Adtran and Juniper switches, extensive WAN links, Fortinet and Cisco firewalls and filters, physical and virtual servers and associated hardware, primarily Windows and some Linux systems,  Monitoring platforms, & Microsoft on-premise and cloud technologies (Microsoft 365, Azure AD).
  • Provide expert/systems knowledge to support and guide the Managed Service partners on the application of Teagasc policies, processes, procedures and standards.
  • Responsible for supporting Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity exercises.
  • Manage software licensing and hardware warranty renewals.
  • Responsible for procurement with regard to the acquisition of software, hardware and services, including drafting, reviewing and evaluation of tenders.

Skills Required

Essential Qualifications:

QQI Level 8 Qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology or other related area.

A proven track record of at least 3 years’ working in an ICT Enterprise environment with similar responsibilities.

Essential Knowledge/Skills:

  • Systems administration and/or Networking Administration skills and experience. 
  • Excellent problem analysis and solving abilities.
  • Network Capacity planning experience.
  • Vendor Management, particularly in the context of Managed Service Providers.
  • Communicating and Influencing: able to implement effective and efficient communication systems; able to persuade and influence others; able to skilfully negotiate with customers and suppliers.
