Sustainable grass production can play a major role on Irish farms, leading to more profitability but also reducing nitrogen loss from our farms through the use of clover, and utilising available data to make quick decisions.
On this episode of the Environment Edge, Cathal Somers and Deirdre Glynn are joined by Dr Deirdre Hennessey, UCC lecturer in Sustainable Agriculture.
Topics discussed included the barriers to implementing grass-clover systems on farm, including soil fertility, grazing management, a lack of grass measurement or utilisation of the resulting data, and actually establishing the clover plant within swards.
Also discussed are management practices for red clover swards and swards containing chicory, with Dr. Hennessy discussing some ways to extend the persistency of legumes and herbs within swards.
