Soil in Focus: Photography Competition Launched for Soil Health Week

A national photography competition, ‘Soil in Focus’ has been launched, supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. It is taking place as part of Teagasc Soil Health Week, the citizen science project GroundTruth, which is co-funded by Research Ireland and the Department of Education and Youth.

Soil in Focus Photo Competition

This exciting photography competition is open to everyone, whether you are a keen amateur, a student, or simply someone with an interest in soil. Entrants are invited to capture creative, striking, or thought-provoking images of soil and its importance to our lives.

Dr Veronica Nyhan, soil and plant nutrition specialist says “Healthy soils not only provide us with plentiful crops, but support a whole ecosystem, helping to maintain a healthy environment for all. This competition provides an opportunity for everyone to explore the soils in their locality and capture and share what they find. ”

  • 1st Prize: €250 One4All voucher
  • 2nd Prize: €150 One4All voucher
  • 3rd Prize: €100 One4All voucher

Soil Health Week will feature a wide range of events across Ireland, including webinars, podcasts, farm walks, and school visits. The week’s aim is simple but vital: to get people talking about soil and to raise awareness of its role in food production, climate, biodiversity, and the wider environment. From farmers and teachers to advisors, students, and the public, everyone is encouraged to take part.

GroundTruth, a joint project between Teagasc and VistaMilk Research Ireland Centre, is committed to engaging the public with soil health and building stronger connections between science and society.
