Knowledge Hub for a Sustainable Irish Bioeconomy

An evidence-based network diagram based on Social Network Analysis of available secondary data identified the main actors and sectors involved and cooperating in Ireland’s bioeconomy in 2020.

This first social network diagram was produced based on analysis of secondary data relating to actors and institutions involved in the Irish bioeconomy, and cooperation between these actors and institutions.

In 2022, taking a participatory co-design approach with the diverse members of Ireland’s National Bioeconomy Forum, an updated map was produced reflecting members’ knowledge and experiences of involvement in the Bioeconomy.

Additional actors, sectors and connection configurations were identified, using the initial map (based on secondary data sources) as a basis. The co-designed map, once graphically designed, was presented back to the forum and further amendments were applied.

Members of the Bioeconomy Forum Secretariat conducted an exercise to rank the relative significance of the most active actors and institutions in the network, and those who required greater integration through collaboration etc. The co-design process, building on research evidence, secured members’ buy in and improved the accuracy, credibility and use of the map among stakeholders and policy-makers. The co-designed map provided a strategic knowledge resource to inform decisions in relation to needed policy & extension supports and opportunities to further progress the development of Ireland’s bioeconomy, securing a Just Transition. A further update, with additional elements such as an in-depth focus on particularly active hubs & potential for transferability of good practices, is planned for 2026.
