Dairy Breeding Week 2026

The breeding season on Irish dairy farms has become increasingly concentrated in the late April to June period. The purpose of dairy Breeding Week, which takes place from Monday, 30th March to Friday, 3rd April, is to provide timely information and reminders for farmers on important genetic and technical issues underpinning a successful dairy breeding season.

Throughout this week timely information will be published through various Teagasc communication channels starting with the Dairy Edge Podcast today, Monday, 30 March.

This episode of The Dairy Edge podcast presented by Teagasc Dairy Specialists, Stuart Childs and James Dunne, will feature Professor Donagh Berry, Teagasc who will discuss breeding the next generation of sires.

Tomorrow Tuesday, 31 March a video on ‘Maximising Breeding Performance in Replacement Heifers’, with Owen McPartland, Teagasc, will be published through Teagasc corporate social media channels.

A second video on ‘Identifying Problem Cows and Acting Early to Maximise Early Season In-Calf Rate’ will be published on Wednesday, 1 April.

A webinar titled ‘Countdown to Breeding 2026; Maximising the Success of the Dairy Breeding Season’ will take place on Wednesday 1 April ay 8pm. The webinar will be chaired by Stuart Childs, Teagasc Dairy Specialist and includes panellists: Dr Stephen Butler, Teagasc; Dr Doreen Corridan, National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC) CEO; and Kieran Condon, Dairy Farmer from Kells, County Kilkenny.

A video on ‘Maximising Synchronisation Success’ will be published through Teagasc corporate social media channels, on Thursday, 2 April. The week concludes with the publication of a fourth video on ‘Sire Advice, Adequate Replacements and Maximising Your Beef Calf Crop’ on Friday, 3 April.

Throughout the week there will be a regular flow of articles on Teagasc Daily and the Teagasc App .
