Athenry
Lisa McGrane is a Walsh Scholar who has a real passion in the research industry. In this video she talks about her project which involves research into the sheep production systems and her experience as a Walsh Scholar.
Oyinlola (Lola) Ogunpaimo is a Walsh Scholar who talks about how becoming a Walsh Scholar has enabled her to study in an internationally recognised company like Teagasc. She gives us an insight into her research and her background in climate change.
Grange
Emily Roskam is a Walsh Scholar based in Grange. She talks about how she wanted to develop her research and learning further with Teagasc. Her research is in developing dietary feed additives that reduce methane emissions in ruminants. She says the opportunities with Teagasc are extremely awarding from traveling, attending conferences and growing her network.
Jamie ODriscoll is a Walsh Scholar based in grange wanting to expand his wider knowledge and skill set with Teagasc. He is involved with the research on the slaughter system study with Dr Nicky Byrne. He talks about his time as a Walsh Scholar and how he became aware of this programme.
Moorepark Animal and Grassland
Ciaran Hearn who conducted research in New Zealand applied to be a Walsh Scholar where he is based in Moorpark to develop his research and skills further which he talks about. His Research is on evaluating pasture species for the use in Irish dairy sector. He talks about his experience being a Walsh Scholar and the benefits.
Ellen Fitzpatrick is a Walsh Scholar in Moorpark who is passionate about grassland science and wanted to learn more. Her research is investigating the milk production and quality from cows’ consuming different grasses and ration diets. She talks about her research and knowledge in this field.
Oak Park
Lea Vexler is a Walsh Scholar who wanted to advance her education and skills in plant breeding. She talks about how it was important for her to be part of a group conducting research. Her research is about hybrid strategies for potato breeding.
Maximilian Schughart is a third year PhD student based in Teagasc Oak Park working with insecticide resistant brain aphids and barley yellow porphyry. He is here to learn and improve his skills in this research area. He talks about his experiences and how he has expanded his networks.
Johnstown Castle
Ali Sultan Khan is a Walsh Scholar who talks about the devastating climate change he seen in his home town and how Teagasc have current and previous research mitigation strategies in place. His research focuses on economic and environmental sustainability of bio methane production in Ireland.
Longnan Shi became a Walsh scholar in 2021 as part of the Terra Soil team in Johnstown. His research is developing a model to predict soil organic carbon from a spectroscope. He talks about the state of art equipment provided in Teagasc and about the active research environment.
Moorepark Food
Sarah Gilsenan is a Walsh Scholar who has an undergraduate degree in Nutraceuticals Health and nutrition in TUD. She undertook hr placement in Teagasc grange and knew she wanted to apply to be a Walsh Scholar once she was done. She is looking at way encasing protein on metabolic health. Sarah says everyone is friendly and helpful in Teagasc and recommends this programme to people.
Elena Hayes was an undergraduate in secondary science teaching before becoming a Walsh scholar. Her research is on precision and technology enhanced dairy farming that is a part of visa milk. She undertook a summer research programme which persuaded her to go down the root of research. Elena loves the large support network here at Teagasc.
Ashtown
Jenifer Byrne is a Teagasc Walsh Scholar investigating integrated pest management in horticultural crops in Ireland. She explores Ireland’s horticulture sector and advocates for growers. Jenifer thinks the programme is a great opportunity and she strongly suggests people to apply.
Daniel Ekhlas is a Teagasc Walsh Scholar who works across different departments such as the food safety in Ashtown and the pig development in Moorpark. Daniel had some uncertainties about how to relocate from Austria to Ireland and how to get set up for his PhD. He describes his time as a fantastic experience.
Mary Ann Kent has completed a bachelors in University College Dublin and is now a Walsh Scholar based in Teagasc Ashtown. She Encourages people to apply as she found the supervisors very helpful and supportive. She talks about broadening her skills in the lab and her plans to do a post doc when she completes her PhD.
