Close-to-nature forest management workshops

Integrating biodiversity and production

Outdoor Forest training is back this September with two new workshops on offer to forest owners but also relevant to forestry professionals and the general public.

This workshop will take place in our in-forest marteloscope training facility at the Teagasc Oak Park Research Centre, Carlow.

A marteloscope plot is an outdoor-classroom forest facility for forest management training. It facilitates “learning-by-doing” and use specially designed software integrated into touch screen tablets

During these two practical outdoor workshops, you will learn how forest management can help promote biodiversity in your forest (workshop 1) and following from that, you will explore how appropriate management can help integrate timber production with biodiversity enhancement (workshop 2).

The booking for each workshop is independent from the other. Each workshop functions as stand-alone but taken together they form a natural progression and offer a rounded 2-day course, accessible to owners, on multipurpose forest use.

Each workshop runs from 10 am until 4 pm with lunch at 12.30 in nearby coffee shop.

The workshops are free, but pre-registration is required.

See further details and Eventbrite links for registration below.

Workshop 1:  Forest Management for biodiversity and resilience

During this workshop, you will learn about the range of flora, fauna and fungi that inhabit our forests. We will explore biodiversity, how forest ecosystems work and the main forest characteristics that support high levels of biodiversity. In particular, participants will train in new simple survey methodologies. This will help forest owners gauge the potential biodiversity value of their forest and how this knowledge can inform future management in practice, to enhance biodiversity and resilience.

Workshop 2:  Explore integrated forest management potential

In this practical outdoor workshop, you will learn how forest management can help integrate timber production with biodiversity enhancement. In this specially designed outdoor workshop, you will learn how forest management can help integrate timber production with biodiversity enhancement and the other many important services that forests provide to owners and society.
