Newford Open Day

Event Time
Venue Scrine, Co. Roscommon

A Suckler Cow Breeding Event will take place on Wednesday, 22nd April on the Newford Suckler Demonstration Farm in Skrine, Co. Roscommon, focused on improving herd performance and reducing labour through smarter tools and management practices.

This practical, on-farm event will highlight key breeding tasks including genetics of the Newford cow and terminal sires used, calving at 24 months, body condition scoring, nutrition planning, fertility management and heat detection. Experts will demonstrate how technology such as heat detection aids, compact calving and improved handling facilities can streamline daily tasks and save valuable time. Attendees will gain practical advice to boost conception rates, improve efficiency and make suckler farming more sustainable and labour-friendly ahead of the breeding season.

“Artificial insemination offers significant benefits for suckler herds,” said Newford farm manager, Shane McGuinness. “It allows farmers to access superior genetics and tailor breeding to the farm’s goals, while also reducing the need for handling bulls on-farm and increasing overall efficiency and labour productivity”.

Newford Farm is a joint partnership between Teagasc, Dawn Meats and McDonalds.
