The Teagasc Future Beef team hosted the second event in their two-part webinar series, A Guide to a Successful Calving Season, on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
The webinar highlighted how calf performance and farm profitability begin well before calving, and focused on the importance of correct nutrition, mineral supplementation, vaccination and calving management.
Webinar host Aisling Molloy, Future Beef Advisor, was joined by John Donlon, Veterinary Lecturer, ATU and Wesley Browne, Future Beef Farmer, where they discussed best practice during calving and the critical first hours and days of a calf’s life, a period when most losses occur.
Topics discussed included: calving the suckler cow – recognising normal calving, managing difficult calvings and knowing when to intervene; and newborn calf management – colostrum management, hygiene, housing and early disease prevention.
