Alternative bedding options

On this episode of the OviCast podcast, Teagasc Sheep Specialist, Ciarán Lynch was joined by Dr. Liz Genever, an independent sheep and beef consultant, who spoke on an on-farm project that she was involved in that examined various bedding options.

Liz gave a background to the project, what bedding options were compared, how they set it up and what they examined. The levels of usage of various bedding sources, labour input, ewe cleanliness and ultimately the costs involved were also discussed.

The suitability of each bedding option, a hybrid bedding model – incorporating different bedding options – and how the farm where the project was conducted changed practices were also highlighted. Finally, Liz concluded by identifying the ways to stretch supplies with key areas to focus on.
