Aspiring to grow your own veg?

Are you one of the many thousands visiting Bord Bia Bloom over the coming days and aspire to grow you own veg? If so, then a visit to the Teagasc presence at one of Europe’s largest horticulture events is a must.

Each year, Teagasc, Bord Bia and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine come together at Bloom to create an inspiring, informative and educational feature in the Food Village. This year’s event, taking place from 28 June to 1 June, is no different and features interactive exhibits based on the centralised theme of ‘Horticulture is Life’.

Over the course of the five days, Teagasc advisors, educators and specialists, along with industry speakers and representatives, will be present to explore the rewards and practicalities of growing your own vegetables.

Speaking ahead of the event, Specialised Vegetable Advisor at Teagasc, Eoin Sweetman said: “Whether you have a full allotment, a garden bed or just a pot by the back door, Teagasc staff will be present to share practical tips and advice on growing your own veg – both through speaking slots and interactive displays.”

A focus will be placed on choosing crops to suit your space; whether vegetables and herbs for smaller boxes, or roots, brassicas or potatoes where the option to grow on the flat, in drills or in raised beds is available.

“Over the course of the event, we’ll discuss crop planning to get the most from the area available and we will share practical advice on establishing, growing and producing vegetables from your garden to the table,” Eoin Sweetman added.
