Award winning dairy farm to host ‘Dairying at Dusk’ event

A National Farm Walk on the farm of John, Maria and Brendan Walsh, winners of the 2024 Teagasc/FBD Environmental Sustainability Award, will take place on Tuesday, 10 June.

Organised by Teagasc, FBD and Dairygold, this ‘Dairying at Dusk’ event will be of interest to farming and non-farming families and the general public. At the event, you’ll meet John, Maria and Brendan Walsh, the family who are leading the way in running a sustainable dairy farm.

The Walshs’ win in the Teagasc/FBD Environmental Sustainability Award was based on four key sustainability pillars. They run a highly efficient and profitable dairy operation; have adopted smarter ways to grow grass without compromising on grass yield; they’ve made biodiversity a long-standing priority; and their nitrogen surplus is almost half the national average – a significant action in reducing the risk to water quality.

Speaking in advance of the walk, Brendan and John Walsh said they look forward to welcoming the general public to their farm to show what actions they and other farmers across the country are taking to improve environmental sustainability.

“Our message to other farmers is start small, seek good advice, and don’t fear failure.”

Dr. Siobhan Kavanagh, Teagasc Signpost Programme and chair of the judging panel, highlighted that the Walshs’ success story is not just about awards, but about building a resilient and environmentally responsible future for Irish farming. John and Brendan are passionate about making a good living from farming but also looking after the environment. Their story shows that you can farm profitable while also looking after nature.

Taking place on Tuesday, 10 June at 6:30pm at Ballylooby, Co. Tipperary, everyone is welcome to attend, and complimentary refreshments will be available.
