Cover crop and soil health event set for Oak Park

Cover crop and soil health event set for Oak Park

This Friday, October 30th, Teagasc will host a practical tillage event centred on cover crops, soil health and farmer wellbeing at Teagasc, Oak Park, Carlow.

Commencing at 11am, the event titled: ‘Rooted in Health – Cover crops, healthy soils and healthier farmers’ will explore how cover crops can help build healthier, more resilient soils.

Visitors to Oak Park will have the opportunity to see more than 20 different cover crop species, alongside demonstrations comparing different cover crop establishment methods, including drone-sown, broadcast into a standing crop, sown at harvest and sown post-harvest.

Additionally, the event will also feature discussions on the role of cover crops in building soil health, as well as demonstrations of practical soil health assessment techniques.

In addition to the tillage demonstrations, the Irish Heart Foundation will provide free health checks for farmers attending on the day. Farmers wishing to avail of a health check are encouraged to reserve an appointment when registering for the event.
