Cultivate your own future: Apprenticeships in horticulture
If you love working outdoors, enjoy seeing your efforts thrive, and a job where no two days are the same, this is for you. Paddy Smith, College Lecturer, tells us more.
Ireland’s horticulture sector isn’t just growing plants – it’s growing careers. From vibrant vegetable fields to blooming flower nurseries, the industry is bursting with opportunities for young people to cultivate skills, earn a wage, and contribute to high-quality Irish food production. One of the most dynamic ways to step into this world is through the Horticulture Apprenticeship.
This isn’t your typical classroom experience. Apprentices split their time between hands-on work on farms, gardens, and nurseries, and formal education in science, sustainability, and technology. They gain real-world skills while building a foundation to grow a meaningful career.
A milestone moment on 4 February 2026, the programme celebrated a major milestone: the first-ever cohort of horticulture apprentices graduated at the Tullamore Court Hotel. The ceremony highlighted the apprentices’ achievements and showcased how this pathway is shaping the next generation of horticulture professionals. Graduates are now contributing their skills across farms, gardens, and businesses throughout Ireland.
Exploring career pathways
Interest in horticulture apprenticeships is blooming nationwide. Senior cycle students are attending college open events and expos to explore their future options, meet employers, and discover the wide array of career possibilities in the sector. The 2026 Apprenticeship Expo at Knightsbrook Hotel in Co Meath attracted over 5,000 visitors and 80 exhibitors. Teagasc land-based apprenticeships, including horticulture, were strongly represented, showing that careers can range from landscaping, parks, and gardens to fruit and vegetable production. For students, parents, and career-changers alike, it was a chance to see that horticulture combines science, sustainability, technology, and entrepreneurship.
Learning by doing
The heart of the apprenticeship is, quite literally, in the soil. Apprentices gain hands-on experience on working farms, learning skills that classrooms alone can’t teach.
Charlie McCormack, a first-year apprentice on McCormack’s Family Farms, part of a third-generation herb-growing business, says: “I’ve always loved horticulture and helping out on our family farm. Even though I studied business and geography, I wanted something more hands-on. The apprenticeship lets me work outdoors, drive tractors and cultivators, and develop practical skills that support the future of the farm. Every day brings new challenges and lessons you simply can’t get from a classroom.”
Or Emma Fallon at Clarke’s Fresh Fruit, who was drawn to the program because of its practical, seasonal variety: “I was completely new to horticulture when I joined Clarke’s Fresh Fruit in late 2024, originally to manage payroll and help digitise the farm. But spending time around the plants quickly sparked my interest, and I became fascinated by growing soft fruit. The apprenticeship balances structured learning with hands-on experience, letting me face real challenges in the field and learn skills like pruning, crop planning, and pest management. Every day and every season brings lessons you simply can’t get from a book.”
These stories show that horticulture apprenticeships aren’t just about learning – they’re about growing skills, confidence, and a real connection to Irish food production.
More than a job – a future
For students considering life after school, horticulture apprentice ships offer a clear path into a career that is meaningful, rewarding, and rooted in the land. Apprentices emerge not only with practical skills but with an understanding of how their work supports sustainable Irish food systems and local communities. If you love working outdoors, enjoy seeing the results of your efforts thrive, and want a career where no two days are the same, a horticulture apprenticeship is more than a job – it’s a chance to cultivate your future.
