Diary date: Lowland and hill sheep Growing Organics walk
On Friday, September 25 at 2pm, Barry and Sharon O’Hagan will host a Growing Organics Farm Walk, centred on their lowland and hill sheep production system.
A husband-and-wife farming partnership, Barry and Sharon run a flock of 150 mid-season lambing ewes. To improve the value of store lambs sold, emphasis has been placed on improving the genetics within the flock in recent years. Consisting of a mix of lowland and hill breeds, their flock produces approximately 1.5 lambs per ewe.
Farming a mix of hill and lowland grazing, Barry and Sharon have trialled reseeding with red clover and multispecies since converting to organic farming in 2023 and the results of this can be seen during the event taking place at Glenboy, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, F91 R260 on Friday, September 25 at 2pm.
Housing infrastructure has also been improved in recent years. The new sheep house and dungsted currently being developed will be demonstrated and discussed at the farm walk.
Along with focusing on their farming system, the farm walk will feature discussions on red clover and multispecies, soil health and soil fertility, biodiversity measures, farm infrastructure / TAMS Grants, and farmer mental health.
The farm walk will be held as part of Soil Health Week, which takes place from Monday, 21 to Friday, 25 September. As part of Soil Health Week, we’ll also demonstrate practical on‑farm soil health assessments and share the results of tests carried out by the farmer.
