Environment Edge: Climate targets, technology and profitability on the farm
Dr Deirdre Hennessy, UCC lecturer in Sustainable Agriculture, joins this episode of the Environment Edge to discuss the tools and technologies that farmers can use to meet climate targets.
Joining hosts, Cathal Somers and Deirdre Glynn, Dr Hennessy touched on the importance of generational renewal, highlighting why it’s important to encourage farmers and the next generation on the climate journey.
On the podcast, Dr Hennessy explained: “Greenhouse gas emission targets have been to the forefront in a lot of discussions around dairy farming and agriculture in general over the last number of years.
“Teagasc has done a lot of work in developing the MACC curve and the measures in that to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions on farms while allowing the farms to remain economically viable.”
Dr. Hennessy noted that sustainability is a three-legged stool, encompassing economic, social and environmental components, before adding: “There are lots of things we can do in terms of the farm, and being more technically efficient is beneficial from an economic and environmental point of view.”
