Let’s Talk Equine – Gut Health

On this episode of Let’s Talk Equine, host Wendy Conlon, Teagasc Equine Specialist was joined by Kerrie Kavanagh, Head of Microbiology at the Irish Equine Centre.

Kerrie gave a fascinating insight into the power of microorganisms in the equine gut and the numerous factors that can affect this gut microbiome. Kerry explained the many potential impacts of gut dysbiosis (disturbance of the gut microorganism population) and red flags that suggest further investigation. The use of probiotics containing live bacteria harvested from the equine’s own faecal samples both to prevent and resolve issues arising from imbalanced gut microbiome were discussed.
