New short course: Weaning to Three Year Old Husbandry and Early Training
Bookings are now open for a new blended learning short course on weaning to three year old husbandry and early training, taking place in November 2026.
The course is aimed at horse and pony breeders, owners and producers aged 18 years or older who wish to improve or refresh their knowledge of young horse husbandry and early training.
The course will begin with three evening sessions delivered online through Zoom from 7pm to 9.30pm on Tuesday, November 10th, Thursday, November 12th and Thursday, November 19th. These sessions will be followed by a practical learning day at Kildalton Agricultural College, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny, on Thursday, November 26th, from 11am to 3.30pm.
The course will provide information on the husbandry of young horses, including weaning management through to three year old sales time, with reference to those targeting foal sales. It will also introduce new or inexperienced horse and pony breeders to the basics of nutrition, healthcare, weaning and castration, land management and basic handling. An accompanying course manual will also be provided.
Topics covered will include nutrition for young and growing equines, including a session with an equine nutritionist; healthcare basics; how equines learn and their behavioural needs and responses, including a session with an equine behaviour expert; weaning and castration; and land management and parasite prevention, with specialists in both topics.
The course fee is €200. Spaces are limited, so early booking is advised. This course is being delivered as part of the ECHO collaboration.
