Post-Storm Forestry Harvesting Demonstration in Co Roscommon on April 8

Following a successful event in County Galway on Tuesday last, the Teagasc Forestry Development Department continues its event series, next Tuesday, as part of their ongoing support for forest owners impacted by recent storms. Teagasc Forestry Development Officer Noel Kennedy tells us more.
An informative post-storm harvesting demonstration will take place next Tuesday April 8, near Castlerea, Co Roscommon. Attendees are asked to arrive between 10:00 am to 11:30 am at St Kevin’s GAA Club (Eircode F45 K500). On arrival, there will be opportunity to engage with Teagasc forestry advisory staff before being bussed in groups to a local forest site to experience post-storm forest harvesting and forest restoration planning.

Forest owners attending the post storm event in Ballymacward, Co. Galway on Tuesday last experienced active timber harvesting in a 27 year-old highly productive forest that had been significantly impacted by recent storms. This demonstration was held in a forest where an appropriate response plan is in place. Attendees were brought through the key steps in developing such a plan, helping ensure an orderly process of timber harvesting and forest restoration.
A key positive message from the event was that, despite the storm impacts, the vast majority of the windblown timber on site is harvestable and will be sold into normal timber markets. Owners were able to view the various log assortments being harvested, hear of current price trends and the important steps in optimising timber value from the forest site.
Your forest is a valuable asset, and Teagasc staff are here to support you in protecting and maximizing its potential.
