‘Preparing your dairy-beef calves for sale in 2025’ – DairyBeef 500 to host live webinar

Centred on the topic of preparing your dairy-beef calves for sale in 2025, the Teagasc DairyBeef 500 team, along with industry stakeholders, and programme farmers, will host a live webinar on Thursday, December 5, 2024. Gordon Peppard, DairyBeef 500 Advisor, previews this event.

Commencing at 8pm on December 5, this webinar will provide dairy farmers with excellent practical information and advice on preparing for the upcoming calving season. Some of the key topics covered include producing a quality healthy calf, calf movement regulations, and the breeding requirements for next season.

This webinar will be of real interest to all dairy farmers who sell calves from their herd to be reared under dairy calf to beef systems.

On the night, Teagasc Dairy Specialist, Stuart Childs will provide excellent information on calf movement regulations – whether you are selling calves from farm to farm, through marts or to export. He will also address the calving penning area required for different herd sizes, and varying six week calving rates, with various ages of calves for sale.

To maximise the health of the calf born in the spring, MSD Animal Health’s Emma Sargent will cover vaccination of the dairy cow in advance of the 2025 calving season.

Looking ahead to breeding the dairy cow next year, Alan Twomey of Munster Bovine will look at designing a breeding plan to not only provide high-quality replacement dairy heifers, but to also produce excellent quality calves of high genetic merit for sale to the beef farmer.

A live panel discussion will conclude the webinar, with presenters available to give their views and opinions. Viewers will also have the opportunity to ask questions and have them answered on the night.
