Signpost dairy farm walk heading for Tipperary

Dairy farmer, Edwin Thompson will host a Teagasc Signpost Farm Walk on his farm in Golden, Co. Tipperary on April 29.

A participant in the Signpost Programme and supplying Arrabawn Tipperary Co-op, Edwin has made huge strides in terms of sustainable farming practices in recent years, stemming from a focus on soil fertility, reducing his farm’s reliance on chemical nitrogen, and by placing an emphasis on the genetics in play in his herd – both dairy and beef.

Soil fertility on this farm is exceptionally good, with 75% of his soils optimum for pH, phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). On an individual basis, 90%, 94% and 89% optimum for K, P and pH, respectively.

Additionally, in an effort to reduce chemical nitrogen usage, Edwin has been a strong advocate of incorporating white clover, using the clover scorecard to estimate clover content in his swards and thus reducing chemical nitrogen input during peak clover growth periods. Additionally, all slurry is spreading via LESS technologies, and all chemical nitrogen is spread in the form of protected urea.

Topics for discussion at the farm walk include:

  • Farm update
  • Milk quality, sustainability bonus and water quality
  • Practical tips using protected urea
  • Soil fertility / clover

Join us on Tuesday, 29 April at 11am for a Signpost Dairy Farm Walk on the farm of Edwin Thompson, Kilmore, Golden Co. Tipperary, E25 P603.
