Talking Timber is coming to Co. Cork

Teagasc is delighted to announce that its popular annual conifer timber marketing event, 'Talking Timber' returns on Tuesday, September 1. This year’s focus is 'Sustainably increasing the value of your forest'. Teagasc Forestry Advisor, John Casey tells us more.

Join us at Charleville Park Hotel, Limerick Road, Rathgoggan North, Charleville, Co. Cork, P56 V268, on Tuesday, September 1, from 9:30am to 2:30pm, with registration from 9:30am to 10:00am.

This event, held in association with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Forest Industries Ireland, will address key aspects in management and marketing of timber to help enhance value.

With an increasing number of private conifer forests on the pathway to reaching maturity, forest owners need to know the key steps to enhance the value of this important resource. Having access to current research-backed forest management options is crucial to forest owners with established forests, as well as having information on enhancing forest resilience, the availability of Government supports, approaches to forest certification, achieving tax efficiencies and future market developments, all of which will be covered on the day.

Key Questions Answered

As with many other farm products, forest owners also need to understand their conifer forest’s unique qualities and potential. What product assortments does your forest contain? What are the respective volumes of construction timber, packaging, fencing material, pulpwood or indeed biomass material that can be considered in harvest planning? What is the timber worth?

Talking Timber 2026 will provide such up-to-date information. With a focus on conifer forests, it will also give forest owners an opportunity to engage with many service providers within the forest sector, including support organisations, timber buyers, harvesting contractors and registered foresters.

The event includes

• Opening address by Mr Niall Collins, TD., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, with special responsibility for Forestry, Farm Safety and Horticulture.
• An outdoor demonstration organised by Forest Industries Ireland (FII) where attendees can view and discuss the quality and assortments of conifer timber required by Irish sawmills. Like other farm-based products, the quality of the timber has a significant bearing on demand and the market price offered.
• Short conference-style presentations from forestry experts offering perspectives, advice, and experiences of key sectoral issues outlined. Presentations are followed by a Q&A session.
• Forest industry expo, representing a range of businesses, state and educational organisations and forestry service providers, offering valuable networking, information exchange and “doing business” opportunities with forest owners.
