Teagasc Forestry Advice at BEEF2026

The Teagasc Forestry Development Department will be present at BEEF2026, sharing plenty of insights on how forestry can play an important role in the whole farm planning process.

BEEF2026 is back in Teagasc Grange, Co. Meath on Wednesday 1st July. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Driving Sustainable Performance’, reflecting new opportunities to improve the productivity and profitability of beef cattle production while continuing to meet the highest standards in sustainable farming systems.

Plenty of planting options

The Teagasc Forestry Development Department will be present on the day with plenty of insights on how forestry can play an important role in the whole farm planning process.

Kevin O’Connell, Teagasc Forestry Advisor explains: “Under the Forestry Programme 2023–2027, there are planting options suitable for many farms, regardless of enterprise or scale, such as timber-focused planting, native woodland establishment, continuous cover systems and agroforestry (a combination of trees with livestock).

“There are also other grant supported options to plant small areas of native woodland through the Native Tree Area Scheme.

“Whatever the forest type or scale, every tree planting project can deliver production, climate, water quality, biodiversity and landscape benefits,” Kevin O’Connell added.

Practical information

Practical information on how forestry interacts with other farm schemes (e.g. BISS, ACRES, organics), the application process, and correct preparations to ensure the job is done right first time should be pursued to facilitate the decision-making process.

This is an ideal opportunity to explore how forestry and woodland creation can work for you. Comprehensive information and advice will be available on incentives to create new forests and to support owners of existing forests. On the day, forestry personnel from Teagasc will be available to answer all your queries on issues such as:

  • Overview of current forestry schemes including the Native Tree Area (NTA) and the Afforestation schemes
  • Outlining the support measures that are available to better manage existing forests
  • Improving farm income
  • Applying for grants and how to get the work done
  • Forestry interaction with other agricultural schemes e.g. BISS
  • Forestry, biodiversity and water management

For existing forest owners, all queries will be addressed on the day, including:

  • What support measures are available to help them better manage your forests
  • Details of schemes covering Woodland Improvement, Native Woodland Conservation, Forest Roads, Reconstitution Ash Dieback and the Climate Action Performance Payment e
