Teagasc Pig Research Farm performance in 2023
In the first video update of 2024 from the Moorepark Pig Research Unit, Aisling provided an overview of the unit’s achievements and challenges throughout 2023.
Aisling discussed significant metrics in reproductive success, including an 86% farrowing rate. The average number of piglets born alive saw a slight increase from 15.7 in 2022 to 16 in 2023, with birth weights holding steady at approximately 1.42 kilograms. Despite minor fluctuations in weaning weights, with an average decrease from 8.7 kilograms in 2022 to 8.3 kilograms in 2023, the overall health and productivity of the herd is good.
Aisling highlighted a shift in herd management practices, emphasizing the breeding of their own gilts, which has resulted in a younger herd profile. While some figures, like average birth and litter weights at weaning, have slightly decreased, these are not cause for concern given the transitional state of the herd.
The unit achieved a success by surpassing 30 pigs sold per sow in 2023, marking a significant milestone with 30.7 pigs sold per sow and a total of 2,950 kilograms of pork sold per sow, based on an average herd size of 165.
Looking ahead, Aisling introduced the implementation of a new herd management system aimed at enhancing precision farming in the unit. She also mentioned a focus on long tail batches, improving stocking density and enrichment for both weaners and finishers.
