Update from Dr. Olivia McAuliffe, project lead for the Bioprocess Innovation Suite
Progress is continuing on the new Bioprocess Innovation Suite at Teagasc Moorepark. In the past month, the furniture fit out has been completed, and the final fix of gas pipework, electrical fittings and plumbing is underway.
In June, the EBSTAR project team will present their work at RRB 2022 – 18th International Conference on Renewable Resources and Biorefineries, in Bruges, Belgium.
Staff Profile: Dr Eoin Byrne
Dr Eoin Byrne is a postdoctoral researcher working on the SFIfunded EBSTAR project: Efficient Biotransformation of Underutilised and Waste Food Processing Streams into Alternative and Renewable Products.
Eoin has extensive knowledge and experience in fermentation technology and microbiology, including bioprocess design, operation of fermentation processes, bacterial strain development, media optimisation, analytical techniques and technical writing.
Equipment: Applikon miniBio
• The Applikon miniBio is a flexible smallscale bioreactor with a volume range of 50-200 ml.
• The head plate includes ports for pH, DO sensors, a septum, foam and level sensor, overlay, chemostat, thermowell for temperature sensor, sparger aeration (L-sparger or porous sparger), multiple liquid inlets, sample pipe and exhaust condenser.
• 8 individual miniBio units will allow for multiple experiments in parallel
