Watch: Latest Updates from the Pig Research Facility

In this video update Aisling Holmes, Research Technician at the Teagasc Pig Research Facility, gives us an update on farrowing house performance, co-mingling, gilts and the upcoming Teagasc Pig Farmers’ Conference 2024.

In this update, the focus is on recent progress in farrowing rooms and overall facility performance. Over the past few months, there has been an increase in live births, with the average number of live piglets per litter rising from 15.9 in the first half of 2024 to approximately 16.5. Weaning numbers have also seen improvement, with the average number of piglets weaned rising from 13.6 to 14.3, and some batches even reaching 14.5. Weaning weights have remained steady, ranging between 8.5 to 9 kilograms, similar to earlier in the year.

The Teagasc Pig Development Department team is preparing for the 30th annual Pig Conference, on October 22nd at the Horse and Jockey Hotel in County Tipperary, followed by a session on October 23rd at Farnham Estate, Cavan. This year’s conference features an impressive line-up of invited speakers, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the discussions on the day.
