Watch: Teagasc Pig Research Farm Update December 2023
In the final update video of 2023 we meet Aisling Holmes research technician at the Teagasc Pig Research Facility (TPRF).
Aisling provides an update on activities at the Pig Research Farm. She mentions the upcoming sale of a batch of pigs from the low emissions building and plans to restock before Christmas. She discusses changes to the farrowing rooms, including a shift towards alternative production systems like co-mingling.
Aisling speaks about an upcoming change in the herd management system. They are transitioning from paper and pen recording to a new system that utilizes tablets and smartphones. The new system aims to save time by recording data in real-time through electronic ear tags, eliminating the need for manual input into Excel. This shift is expected to streamline data management, reduce human error, and provide a centralized location for all pig-related information. They are currently trialing different systems to find the most suitable one for the research unit. The goal is to integrate the chosen system by early 2024.
