Farmers Encouraged to Take Action on Arthritis at World Arthritis Day Webinar

Arthritis Ireland and Teagasc will host an expert webinar featuring consultant rheumatologist and a farmer living with arthritis.

Farmers and their families are being encouraged to learn more about arthritis and how it can be prevented, recognised, and managed through a free online webinar taking place on World Arthritis Day, Monday, 12 October, hosted by Arthritis Ireland in partnership with Teagasc.

The webinar will feature Consultant Rheumatologist Dr Joe Devlin and a farmer living with arthritis who will share his personal experience of diagnosis, treatment and adapting to life and work on the farm.

One in five people living in Ireland are affected by arthritis, making it the single biggest cause of disability in the country. Research suggests that farmers are at an even higher risk, with some studies suggesting that more than half have experienced aches and pains related to arthritis or ‘musculoskeletal disorders’ (MSDs). Teagasc National Farm Survey research indicates that MSDs are among the main causes of disability among Irish farmers, which lead to farm income loss and reduced levels of part-time employment. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a serious cause for concern for farmers. Research found that 57% of farmers lost full-time workdays (with over 22% losing 15 days or more). The most commonly affected body regions were lower back 31%, knee 15% and hips 12%.

During the webinar, Dr Joe Devlin will discuss why farmers are at increased risk of developing arthritis and the practical steps they can take to protect their joint health. Topics will include recognising the early signs and symptoms of arthritis, understanding the differences between inflammatory and non-inflammatory forms of the disease, the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, and the role of movement, exercise, and weight management in maintaining mobility and quality of life.

The session will also explore how varying daily tasks, allowing time for recovery and investing in equipment designed to minimise physical strain can help support long-term joint health.

Providing a valuable lived experience perspective, a farmer living with arthritis will share his journey from first noticing symptoms through to diagnosis and treatment, discussing the challenges arthritis has presented in his farming career, the practical changes he has made on the farm and the positive outlook that has helped him continue doing the work he loves.

Gráinne O’Leary, Chief Executive of Arthritis Ireland, said: “The physical demands of farming can take a significant toll on joint health over time. Through this webinar, we want to equip farmers and their families with practical information that can help them recognise the signs of arthritis early, access treatment and make positive changes that protect their health and wellbeing. We are delighted to partner with Teagasc again this year to bring this important conversation directly to the farming community.”

Francis Bligh, Health and Safety Specialist with Teagasc, said: “Good health is fundamental to running a successful farm. Arthritis can affect people of all ages and can have a major impact on daily farming activities if left unaddressed. This webinar will provide farmers with expert guidance and practical advice that can help them maintain their health, remain active, and continue farming safely for years to come. We encourage farmers and their families to join us for what promises to be a very informative session.”

The webinar is free to attend and registration is now open here
