In this month’s edition:

• Beef Welfare Scheme 2025
  If you are interested in signing up to the Beef Welfare Scheme 2025, you have until midnight on September 24 to apply online at agfood.ie. There are three components to the Scheme.
• Silage testing
  Once silage is four to six weeks in the bale or pit, fermentation should have stabilised. This means that you can take a sample for testing.
• September management tips
  As we move towards autumn, there are a number of tasks that need to be completed before the winter housing period.
• Creep feeding
  Creep feeding offers a number of advantages. Firstly, for those of you selling weanlings it will boost weight gain in the run-up to sale.
• Research Update – Impact of sires on dairy-beef steers
  Jamie O’Driscoll, Deirdre Purfield, Nóirín McHugh, Donagh Berry and Nicky Byrne tell us about a study at Teagasc Grange on the impact of sire beef genetic merit on the phenotypic performance of dairy-beef steers. Dairy-beef accounts for over 60% of cattle processed in Ireland, making it a vital component of the beef industry.
• Health & Safety – Grant aid for PTO shaft covers
  The National Farm Safety Measure 2025 was introduced by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to incentivise the purchase and use of PTO shaft covers, which protect farmers and machinery operators from serious and fatal injuries.
