Strategic Pathways for the Teagasc Agricultural Advisory Service 2015-2020
Strategic Pathways for the Teagasc Agricultural Advisory Service 2015-2020

Ireland is fortunate to have a strong agriculture knowledge and innovation support system. Fundamental to this is Teagasc, which combines an integrated research, advisory and education service which is delivered to Ireland’s agri-food sector. The primary asset that Teagasc has is its people and the relationships that permeate the wider agriculture and food industry. Nowhere is this more evident than in the regional advisory service. The advisory service has achieved huge efficiency in recent years reducing staffing by 44% while maintaining client numbers and providing quality services to over 43,000 farm families. The major concern is that these efficiency gains will be negated by the projected reduction (due to retirements) in advisory staff from 240 to 180 by 2020, reducing the critical mass of advisors and spreading the core service thinly. This will damage the advisor farmer relationship and reduce the technology transfer capability. This strategy document highlights the huge impact that advisors h e and recognises the opportunity to re-energise the advisory service by restoring advisory numbers to 240. This can be achieved with minimal extra cost but will deliver huge impact in terms of the productivity and sustainability of family farms.

Growing Cherry Tomatoes for Flavour
Growing Cherry Tomatoes for Flavour

Cherry tomatoes are naturally small and vary in size from a cherry to a table tennis ball. And the smaller the tomato the better the flavour. The following details relate to growing tomatoes under glass or plastic in border soil. By choice of variety, use of high potash (K) feeds and limiting the amount of water applied, tomatoes high in sugars and acids are produced - and hence flavoursome.

Short Rotation Coppice Willow – Best Practice Guidelines
Short Rotation Coppice Willow – Best Practice Guidelines

The world’s gas and oil reserves are a rapidly depleting and increasingly costly resource to exploit and deliver. Ireland generally has a very limited fossil energy resource and as a result imports the vast majority of its requirement. In excess of 85% of the fossil fuel used to generate electricity is imported, principally oil and natural gas. Indigenous peat resources provide a small contribution (11%) with renewables providing only 3%. If the requirement for heat generation and transport fuels are added to the electricity total then Ireland has a dependency on imported energy in excess of 90% and this figure is increasing.
