This submission has been prepared by Teagasc's Working Group on the Water Framework Directive (WFD). It is made in response to the Consultation Paper issued jointly by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) inviting views and comments on proposals for the review of Ireland's Nitrates Action Programme (NAP) which is currently given effect by the European Communities (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters [GAP] Regulations 2010).

This publication marks two significant milestones. First, the 40th anniversary of Ireland’s accession to the European Union, or the European Economic Community as it was then known, and the second, the 40th year of the Teagasc National Farm Survey. The National Farm Survey, is Teagasc’s longest running research project. It was established in 1972 and every year since then it has been used to produce annual estimates of farm income
