The Teagasc Signpost Programme is Ireland’s national initiative to lead climate action within agriculture
by promoting practical, science-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on farms.
The programme fosters collaboration between farmers, advisors, researchers, and industry partners
to embed climate-smart practices into everyday farming decisions.

Across dairy, beef, sheep, and tillage sectors, participating farms have significantly improved soil
fertility, increased adoption of protected urea, and reduced reliance on chemical nitrogen (N) fertilisers.
Lime application has been critical in improving soil pH, enhancing nutrient efficiency. For instance, on
Signpost dairy farms, 70% of soils reached optimum fertility, and over 75% of chemical N used was
protected urea. In addition, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural soils (fertiliser) on dairy
farms has declined by 8%, due to a reduction in the use of fertiliser N.
