Sarah Turner

Sarah and Aaron Turner are enterprising sheep and suckler farmers in a most beautiful part of West Kerry in scenic Gowlanes, Castlecove. Their farm lies within the Killarney National Park National Heritage Site. They have three young children – all eager to help on the farm.  They keep a flock of about 60 ewes of mainly Blackface breeds. Lambing starts from April onwards hoping to avoid challenging weather in early Spring.

They are enthusiastic organic farmers believing that the ethos blends well with the unique landscape they are committed to maintaining. Sarah started a Suckler enterprise in the last two years – with the Dexter Rare Breed being her preferred animal type. This animal type are known for their compact size and ease of care and are well suited to Hill Farming. The cows generally calf from July onwards.

In addition to their sheep and cattle, Sarah and Aaron are proud participants in the Acres Scheme, which promotes biodiversity and sustainable land management. They work hard to implement practices that enhance the health of their pastures and contribute to the local ecosystem.

Hill Sheep and Suckling

Given certain limitations with Hill Ground management, the Turners’ are keen to avail of scheme participation in a way that will combine appropriate land management with improved financial returns. Their goal is to produce high quality organic sheep and cattle in a way that is both sustainable and rewarding and offers a lifestyle that is attractive for family and community life. The BISS, ECO and ANC Schemes also supports their farming activities.
