Predictive Dry Matter Digestibility (DMD) Tool

A field of grass

Value Proposition

A new predictive model and software tool developed by Teagasc & UCD enables real-time assessment of forage digestibility (DMD) during harvest using harvester-mounted near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). It replaces slow, laboratory-based DMD testing with an instant, accurate, field-ready solution, helping breeders and producers make faster, data-driven decisions that improve feed efficiency, animal performance, and sustainability.

Opportunity

Teagasc welcomes engagement with forage breeders, seed and agritech companies, and farm technology providers interested in either:

  • Trialling the Predictive DMD Tool under an Evaluation & Option Licence
  • Collaborating on commercial model deployment or integration with existing NIRS systems.

Development stage

  • Demonstrated on Teagasc breeding plots and benchmarked against laboratory standards.
  • TRL 5 – validated under relevant field conditions.
  • Model requires commercial translation integration with equipment suppliers or agritech partners.

Advantages

  • Rapid & non-destructive – Delivers digestibility results instantly from fresh samples.
  • Proven accuracy – Predictive model validated against measured DMD.
  • Low cost & scalable – No drying or milling; compatible with existing NIRS harvesters.
  • Supports climate action – Higher DMD forage reduces methane emissions.
