Soil Health Metagenomic Database and Profiler Tool

A sprout coming out of soil

Value Proposition

The Soil Health Metagenomic Database and Profiler Tool helps the agriculture, environmental, and biotech sectors improve soil health, reduce risks from antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and support sustainable farming. It offers more precise identification of soil microbes, allowing for better decisions on soil management compared to general databases that are not specifically tailored for soil.

Opportunity

Teagasc is seeking industry partners interested in licensing this novel technology or collaborating on further development projects. This opportunity is ideal for companies in the agtech sector focused on soil health, sustainable farming practices, and the dairy industry.

Development stage

The technology has been validated in a lab environment with mock soil communities and benchmarked against real-world soil samples. Further testing and optimisation are planned in collaboration with industry partners and research teams at Teagasc.

Advantages

Potential applications include Precision Agriculture such as tailored health monitoring and nutrient management particularly to manage AMR, Dairy Processing; assessing soil quality in pasturelands, influencing milk composition and overall product quality and others such as Soil Remediation, Novel Microbial Discovery, and Carbon Capture Initiatives.
